"Now summon all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live."
―2 Kings 10:19

Baal, also known as Baʿal, is the god of weather, hurricanes, storms, thunder and rain of the Phoenicians and Caananites and one of the king of gods in the Canaanite Pantheon. He is usually considered the son of either El or Dagan, and the husband of Astarte or Anat.

Overview[]

Baea was worshipped among the Canaanites as the very important deity of fertility. He also holds the title of chief deity, having seized kingship from Yamm, the sea god.

Ugaritic texts mention other fertility aspects of Baal, such as his consort Anat and his act of siring a divine bull calf from a heifer. Once he fulfilled his fertility role, then both human and animal kind will be blessed with an abundance of crops. Other equivalents of Baal are Greek deity Zeus; the Roman deity Jupiter, the Norse deity Thor, the Indo-European Nasite Hittite storm deity Teshub, and the Egyptian deity Amun.

Baal has also been reinterpreted as the Archdemon Bael.

Description[]

Baal appears as a bearded deity, holding a club and thunderbolt and wearing a headdress with the horns of a bull, which is sacred to him.

Thanks to his vast amount of influence, Baal became known by many important titles, including Prince of the Earth, Lord of Rain and Dew, He Who Rides on the Clouds, and Lord of the Heavens.

Fertility was envisaged in seven-year cycles. In Canaanite mythology, Baal fought with Mot, the deity of death of sterility. It was decreed that if Baal won, humans would enjoy a seven year cycle where food was plentiful. However, if Mot triumphed over him, then the land will be cursed with drought and famine for seven years.
