"You mortals say that war never changes. While I would like to agree with you on some points, I vehemently disagree on others. All wars are fought with a goal in mind. And though that goal may vary in methods, it is the climax that is a constant."
―Ares

Ares is the Greek god of war. He is a member of the Dodekatheon, the son of Zeus and Hera, and unofficial consort of Aphrodite. His Roman counterpart is Mars.

Overview[]

Ares is the embodiment of the physical aspect of war, in contrast to Athena, who embodies the strategic side. Like many deities, he had numerous demigod children, most of whom would be painted as villains in myths.

Ares is unpopular in most Greek regions due to his violent and cruel nature. Even his own father hates him as in the Iliad, when he complained about his injuries, Zeus did not show any parental concern and instead coldly told him that if he was not his son, then he would have been thrown off Olympus already.

Ares is also accompanied by his twin sons Phobos and Deimos and his sister Enyo when riding his war chariot.

Despite being the god of war, Ares is often defeated by other gods, most notably Athena. Even though he is the god of manly courage, he has a tendency to be cowardly and will become upset even at the slightest injury.

History[]

Appearance[]

Despite his rugged and war-like demeanor, Ares is known to be one of the most handsome deities, causing many women to be attracted to him, including Aphrodite. He is usually depicted in standard Greek armor and carries with him a shield, a spear, and a sword.

Personality[]

As the god of war and bloodshed, Ares is a sadistic individual, embracing violence and seeing destruction as beautiful and amusing. He is an incredibly sadistic and ruthless warrior. At his worst he can be aloof, cruel, impetuous, proud, and violent, which causes him to be disliked by many deities. However, he does have a loving relationship with Aphrodite and is good friends with Thanatos. He respects Hestia greatly and is on good terms with Poseidon, who defended him from Hephaestus despite their occasional quarrels.

Despite being a bloodthirsty and dangerous god, Ares is actually a sympathetic father, as he tries to be to his children what Zeus had not been for him, and is both loving and fiercely protective of them. He went so far as to kill Poseidon's son Alirrothios for trying to rape his daughter Alkippe. Although he can be cruel, he is not truly evil and villainous. In fact, much of his bad traits stemmed from the fact his parents never set a good example for him and abandoned him when he started learning their violent ways.

Ares also appears to have some honor and refuses to fight an opponent that is at a disadvantage. Unlike Zeus, he never showed disrespect towards any of his partners.
